Critical time for British agriculture says NFU

British agriculture is entering a critical time, with farmers facing an increasingly challenging environment for food production says National Farmers Union (NFU) president Meurig Raymond.

Stating his industry priorities for 2016, Mr Raymond said that safeguarding farm businesses from the “destructive effects of volatility” will be essential in the year ahead, particularly after the past 12 months of severe farming challenge, which had knocked the confidence of many farmers.

In looking further forward than just 2016, however, he reminded producers that the UK is going to be the “most populous country in the EU” by the mid-2040s, with many more mouths to feed than we have today. Read more

Brussels Sprouts with Bacon

Brussels sprouts and bacon is one of our favourite combinations— a perfect marriage of textures and flavours. Brussels sprouts are robust enough to stand up to salty, chewy bacon, and in turn, the smokiness of the bacon highlights the sprouts’ earthy notes. We like to blanch my Brussels sprouts before roasting; we think that the resulting soft, cooked inside and crispy outside make for an unbeatable texture and taste. Why Does Meat Have to be Manly?

Is the inclination to avoid meat on the part of many women a product of gender messaging? Is the move toward smaller portions of meat an inherently ‘feminine’ approach?

When I was little–7, 8 years old–I used to be able to put away a steak with a gusto that my father remains proud of to this day. He happily recounts a meal we had in snow-covered central Wisconsin: A table full of my WASPy relatives watched, awestruck, as a tiny girl quietly devoured a massive steak with minimal ceremony. For as long as I can remember, one of my most beloved father-daughter traditions has been steak frites night–just the two of us, eating towering plates of grilled red meat and fried potatoes. “We do not agree statutory provision should be used to enforce compulsory slaughter of pigs when bovine TB is believed to be present,” said NPA chief executive Dr Zoe Davies. Read more
