NFU Calls for Grocery Adjudicator Role to be Extended

A Government review into the Grocery Code Adjudicator (GCA) should look at extending the role to cover more of the supply chain, the National Farmers Union (NFU) has said.

This follows an announcement that the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has agreed to launch an industry call for evidence of unfair trading practices, alongside the statutory review of the GCA role. Read more

Co-op to rely only on British for bacon and lamb

The Co-operative has declared that it is to source all its fresh bacon and lamb from British farms.

Hailed by the National Farmers’ Union as a “bold move” that shows a real commitment to quality British food, the Co-op said its switch to 100 per cent domestic bacon and lamb will take effect in its stores from May 1 next year. Read more

Farming has been at the centre of British politics today with NFU members and staff taking the industry to the heart of London, in recognition of Back British Farming Day.

MPs were urged to wear specially designed British wheat lapel badges to Prime Minister’s Questions and to sign the NFU’s post-Brexit pledge, an initiative which drew support from Defra Secretary of State, Andrea Leadsom, and Defra farming minister, George Eustice. Read more

The ship, which will sail from Dover to Gibraltar, from Gibraltar to Suez and then across the Indian Ocean to China is one of many such vessels; so far this year, some 21,000 tons of British pork have been shipped to China, up 73pc on the previous year. Read more

Indeed, so central a part does it play in British culture that it’s impossible to imagine any other dish which so reliably raises the national spirits in times of trouble – devoured by hungry builders, peckish pensioners and footsore royal wedding goers with equal enthusiasm, it’s the simple pleasure which unites the country. EU records 31% rise in pork exports to Japan

Japanese pork imports increased by just under 13% during the first six months of this year with the extra trade shared by both EU and non-EU suppliers, according to AHDB Pork.

The EU-based market share grew more strongly during the half-year, advancing by 31% from 123,500 tonnes in the same period in 2015 to 161,400 tonnes in H1, 2016. Read more
